Electronics from Apple have restrictions that prevent people from running applications not available in their store. People have however successfully introduced a legal way to allow foreign applications run on Apple devices. It is known as jail breaking which has had a good impact since its release. Following the success of previous editions an untethered jailbreak 4.3 was released in 2011.
Using this version, it is not necessary to connect t the device to an external source that will execute the command. Instead the software runs using the operating system of the device. Therefore jail breaking can be done from anywhere thanks to the introduction of this version.
Jail breaking can either be done as a patched or kernel hack. For a patched version, the firmware is not detected when booting the device. The software is however permanent on the device and can only be altered by upgrading the hardware or hard resetting.
The kernel version is uploaded during start up. The system checks for the signature of the software but a kernel exploit occurs and hence the software is uploaded into the system. The untethered jailbreak 4.3 works with devices such as iPhone 3GS, iPhone4 GSM, iPod touch 3G and 4G, iPad and Apple TV. It however does not work on iPad 2 but there are later versions that have been released since then which might work.
Jail breaking Apple devices using unlocking software such as the untethered jailbreak 4.3 is legal. The Apple Company has however termed it as a violation of their terms of use. They have gone ahead to warn that running applications that are not available in their application might be dangerous because it might affect proper functioning like reduced battery life. The company also stated that the use of such software violates the warranty that they issue out with the sale of each of the devices.
